Monday 22.5.2023

12.30-14.00
Lecture: A safer space in education

Theatrum Olga
Ahvenistonkatu 2, 15110 Lahti

What does a safer space mean? What does a safer space mean in education and how can instructors and organisers help create a safer space?

Sign up in advance by May 18th by sending an email to puheenjohtaja@lahdenseta.fi. Limited spaces.

The aim of the safer space principles is to create a mentally safer environment, where all participants strive to build a more equal, inclusive and open atmosphere and basis for conversation through their own actions.

There is no room for discrimination, racism or bullying in a safer space. In a safer space everyone has a chance to be themselves. At the same time it’s an opportunity for self reflection and learning new things.

Lecturers are Vera Karvonen and Noora Kalpio. Vera is a coordinator for youth club and camp activities in Helsinki, and Noora is a children’s instructor for the Pukkila parish. They are human rights activists both in their work and during their free time. They’ve developed the principles of a safer space for early childhood education and care and pre-teen work.

You can access the space from the back via a fairly steep ramp. There is a spacious toilet but no toilet for the disabled.
